Message from the Executive Director

About ten years ago an elderly aunt in her seventies told me she remembered as a child she heard the ‘Indian Agents’ telling her parents and other parents in our community of Bearskin Lake that their children need an education in order to help run the affairs of their community in the years to come. At the time she did not understand why she had to learn to read and write English (...and all the other subjects) because there was no school, band office or any programs or services in the community. Today, there is a band office with many offices, daycare centre, nursing station and a resource office that houses programs and services like Alcohol and Drug Abuse and Tikinagan Child and Family Services and a school with about eight classrooms and a gymnasium. There is an Education Authority and Wahsa Education. This is a typical community of Nishnawbe Aski Nation.

My aunt went on to say organizations have also been set up to work for our communities. These would include Tribal Councils and Nishnawbe Aski Nation and the institutions it created like Oshki-Pimache-O-Win, Nishnawbe Aski Legal Services Corporation, Nishnawbe Aski Development Fund. There are service organizations like Tikinagan Child and Family Services and Payukotayno Family Services. My aunt concluded by saying that she now understands what the Indian Agents meant. All our communities and organizations require people who can read and write the English language (...and the skills and knowledge that come with an education).

The growth in the communities of Nishnawbe Aski Nation and in other treaty areas need people with skills and knowledge to work in their organizations. Maybe you want to work in your community or in one of the organizations but don’t have the skills and knowledge. Maybe you’re already working but want to enhance your skills and knowledge. Here at Oshki-Pimache-O-Win, we are offering a range of culturally appropriate programs in the coming academic year of 2014-2015 that will help you get new or enhanced skills and knowledge for your career or jobs.

Take a close look at our programs and the course listings. If you see a program that interests you submit your application for admission now. Call if you have any questions. When you get accepted you can start on getting your student sponsorship in place and preparing for your learning journey. We look forward to seeing you at OSHKI!

Sincerely,

Rosie S. Mosquito, Executive Director
