Reports To: Project Manager
The Trainee Success Navigator will work to assist students academically, socially and/or personally in an effort to improve student retention, persistence and graduation rates. The Trainee Success Navigator will be responsible for developing relationships and implementing strategies that increase success for individual students. He/she will work in conjunction with the Airport Management Training project team to provide interventions to support the transition into the Airport Management Training program and work placement activities. The Trainee Success Navigator builds trusting relationships and inspires commitment to student progress and to set goals; encourage behaviours that support positive outcomes; and connect to resources/navigate systems that support success. The position involves extensive travel and requires the incumbent to work a variable schedule, including evenings and weekends, in order to support the program and /or student needs.
- Create a student-centred training environment.
- Develop trusting relationships with students, families and their communities enrolled in the Airport Management Training program.
- Organize cultural activities to support individuals and programming deliverables.
- Track needs of students and serve as a liaison between the Pickle Lake Airbase training site, OSHKI-WENJACK campus and their communities to ensure collaboration. Work in coordination with project team, community-based and external stakeholders to monitor
and support students’ academic and work placement progress and address any barriers to success.
- Provide wrap around services with support linkages and referrals for academic and holistic needs.
- Develop and track goals and action steps to encourage and facilitate progress.
- Support the Airport Management Training Coordinator, Project Manager and all project team members as well as industry partners involved in the training and work placement activities.
- Work with the project team, as well as other stakeholders to create a social and emotionally healthy and responsive training environment.
- Keep all process related documentation up to date in student files. Document and record all contact, referrals, case-planning conversations, and progress for program evaluation purposes. Maintain and keep up to date, all contact, referral, and supportive activities.
- Maintain confidential records, collect data and prepare reports related to the functions of advising and implementing support action plans.
- Creative positive working relationships in Nishnawbe Aski Nation with community members, airport operations, Education Authorities, Chief and Councils and other community groups and organizations through regular community contact for:
- Effective promotion of the Airport Management Training program.
- Achievement of student recruitment targets
- Identify candidate education and training needs that will support the capacity requirement of the program.
- Raise the profile of OSHKI-WENJACK as the Institute of first choice.
- Develop and maintain relationships with industry partners, program stakeholders and other partners through liaison, visits, participation on working committees, project team meetings and related events for successful program development and delivery.
- Ensure that legislation, regulations, policies and procedures are not violated.
- Make certain that projects and services are delivered with the approved budget and timelines and that resources are allocated wisely.
- Make certain a safe, healthy and productive training environment.
- Maintain harmonious working relationships.
- Provide reliable and timely information to support the decision-making processes of the organization.
- Develop and maintain positive working relationships with community partners.
- Work in a professional manner, contributing to a positive reputation for the organization in the community.
- University degree, preferably in Education, Indigenous Studies, social services or related area. Consideration will be given to an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- A background in First Nation Education setting would be a definite asset.
- Ability to speak a Nishnawbe Aski Nation language (Cree, Ojibwe or Oji-Cree)
- Knowledge of airport operations in remote communities is an asset.
- Satisfactory Criminal Records Check and Vulnerable Sector Screening required.
- Knowledge or experience in counseling techniques.
- Proven problem-solving skills.
- Demonstrated ability to build relationships with First Nations leadership in Nishnawbe Aski Nation and affiliated organizations and partners.
- Ability to travel to remote First Nation communities.
- Hold a valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle.
- Able to work independently to organize, plan, and self-initiate both long-term and short-term goals.
- Ability to work collaboratively and effectively within a small group setting.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, in particular, the ability to empathize and communicate effectively.
- Proven ability to maintain positive working relationships (internally and externally) and to creatively motivate/persuade program participants.
- Excellent written, verbal, computer and presentation skills.
- Specific experience working with Nishnawbe Aski Nation communities, tribal councils and affiliated organizations.
